A potpourri of various communities and cultures, Mumbai is the most liberal minded and cosmopolitan city in India and is located on Salsette Island in the coastal region known as Konkan. The political capital of Maharashtra, the commercial capital of India and home to India’s film and television industry known as Bollywood, Mumbai in many cities in one. Three lakes are located within the metropolitan limits- the Tulsi Lake, Vihar Lake and Powai Lake. The coastline of the city is indented with numerous creeks and bays. The eastern seaboard of Salsette Island is covered with large mangrove swamps, rich in bio- diversity. The city has unique tastes in cuisine, music, film and literature, both Indian and International. Mumbai is one of the rare cities to accommodate a national park- the Sanjay Gandhi National Park within its city limits. Perhaps, the appropriate place to begin exploring Bombay’s colonial legacy is “Gateway of India”. Built to commemorate the royal visit of George V and Queen Mary in 1911, the gateway is a combination of European and Indian ceremonial architecture. Today it is the favourite destination for tourists.
